Milk

Milk
So I was thinking that it is nice that they finally made this movie. He meant a lot to many of us. I was around 12 when he was killed and I remember that this was also around the time that I was getting "the talk" from my grandfather. Anyway the thing that always botherd me was that the creep that shot him had a movie made about him first. They made a movie about his murderer before they made a movie about Milk.

Milk is a fine movie, and will introduce a whole new generation to Harvey Milk at a time when we need more folks like him.  The documentary that Gus Van Sant used footage from, The Times of Harvey Milk, is also quite good.  Don't disparage Execution of Justice though.  I haven't seen the movie, but I have read the play.  The title alone should tell you (at least) that the play was about more than Dan White.  The play is an attempt to exorcise anger at what happened at that trial (for those who don't know Dan White murdered the mayor of San Francisco and Harvey Milk, and was sentenced to a maximum of 7 years in jail, and served 5, google 'Twinkie Defense').  For all I know the movie could have been a bad episode of Law and Order that tries to justify White's actions, but the play that it was based upon is cool.
I was just bothered that the first movie about the events was focused around Dan White. But remember this murder came at a time when I was really becoming aware of things and the political voices were just starting. I was 12 and my grandfather told me point blank that he realized that I was bi and that I was not the only one in the family and he gave me "the talk" but not the one that the little straight boys get but one that included boys and girls.
Within the year I heard about the first 'Gay Rights" march coming to my area which was the State capital and I had no way to see it or participate in any way.
This was a time before internet or easy access to the few gay papers etc for teens.... we were all very alone. When we would look up things in the library we would read that it was a mental illness. We all new kids who were sent away from school because someone official found out and they had to go to places that could treat them.
I guess that harvey Milk meant a lot at the time, not that he doesn't mean a lot now but most of my generation had serious troubles in this area. I was lucky in that I had three adult male role models in my family who were bi, one was married to a woman and two were partnered with one another so I had a grandfather and uncles. But most people didn't.
It was a very different time and place.
I guess Milk was a hero and it always bothered me that the first movie was about the murderer.
But the 1984 documentary was cool and I agree with you there, that was my senior year when it came out.
I saw Milk at the Castro theater in San Francisco. It was awesome.
